Football

Football (both rugby and soccer) are considered to have evolved from old Greek game which was called harpaston. This game is often mentioned in classical literature and it’s known as very violent and brutal game. The rules of harpaston were very simple: when a player crosses a goal line either by kicking the ball or running with it, or even throwing the ball across the line.  The other team was in charge on preventing them to do so.  The size of field wasn’t determined nor specified, no side lines or boundaries, not even a number of players was determined properly. This game had no rules what so ever. Only object was goal line

It is believed that modern version of football (soccer) originates from England. Game became so popular in that country, that the kings of England (Henry II and Henry IV) had banned football. Nobles believed that the game was progressing to fast, taking away interest from traditional sports. Football clubs in England start to grow and by the year 1863. , UK had various clubs and each club had its own rules on how to play the game. Imagine the surprise when two clubs were organizing the game. Soon, it was clear that rules must be set and determined, so after minor disputes, the football association was formed in London.

Six out of seven schools in Britain were playing this version of the game (soccer), but the seventh school called Rugby school was playing totally different version of football. This game is also known as American football. Running with a ball at Rugby school, adding a cross-bar and rule that a goal could only be scored if the ball passes over the bar were setting this school apart from other schools of that time. By the mid-1860-s, other schools had taken up this game and then the game was named after school where it was played.

In United States the game was immediately played this way, following the rules of Rugby school. But, after a while, the game was altered and rules were a bit changed, to bust the excitement and lower the injury risks. In year 1873, New York, these rules were set and formulated since the game became extremely popular. Here, the number of players on each team was set to 15. 

In the next decade, the game was forbidden in many colleges. Increasing number of injuries and brutality of the game itself became such a problem that if President Theodore Roosevelt hadn’t called few major colleges such as Harvard, Yale and Princeton, the game would be banned. Nearly 180 players were injured, and there were several deaths so, the fear of the sport at the time is justified.
